(4/9/14) -- It's nice when an exhibitor helps narrows the vast selection of great new varieties, series, colors, combinations and retailing programs with sharp focus. From Proven Winner's a most promising "winner" is surely the Cuphea hybrid aptly named, 'Vermillionaire'. Brilliant color, hummingbird magnet, great for all regions, heat, humidity tolerant; drought and excess-water ok; well-branched, mounded habit. Awesome! Golden State Bulb with the always-in-contention Amerihybrid Begonias, instead gave its new dwarf eucomis 'Nani' the nod as a Pick of the Pack. Bring paradise home with this Aloha Lily®, requiring little maintenance; coconut-scented flowers, with long bloom life; use in smaller, single- or larger, multiple-bulb containers.
Amongst several greenhouses of many dozen plant series, the Sunpatiens® impatiens from Sakata Seed is in clear contention for being a Pick of the Pack. With five new colors in two sub-series (compact and spreading) this is a market-leading winner. Online interest simply confirms this heat loving, water indifferent, vigorous favorite is at the top of the list of 2014 Picks. Last but not least, American Takii, among many series on display and in true Japanese-style, humbly presented a sure contender -- the first orange-hued F1 petunia, 'African Sunset'. Known for seed petunia breeding, this Takii offering is humidity tolerant, mounding, vigorous, and not surprisingly a 2014 AAS Winner.
