( + ) Paul Ecke: Selling Ecke Ranch
After nearly 100 years, the poinsettia empire is changing hands—a bittersweet and necessary move, Ecke explains.
Wednesday night the Ecke Ranch announced it has been acquired by the Dutch-based Agribio Group. Here, Paul Ecke III talks with Patch about what motivated the sale, and what’s next for him.
Patch: How long have plans been in motion to sell the Ecke Ranch?
Paul Ecke: I don’t know exactly but it seems about six months. In our industry there has been a lot of consolidation going on for some time. Over the last five years, most of the small breeder producers have been bought and that was one of the things I looked at. When I was growing up we were a big company and today we are on the small side through no fault of our own. What’s going on is consolidation, and that’s natural in all industries. Retailers such as Walmart, The Home Depot, Lowe’s and Costco are driving more and more business, so growers are getting bigger and demanding more from breeder producers. We had ideas to grow, but we had to have capital to grow. The last three or four years was not a good time to find capital.

( + ) Perennials: Summer vs. Late Winter Transplanting Options
By Sarah Mitchell, Syngenta Technical Services
Large perennial growers transplant nearly year-round to produce crops that meet their market needs. For growers who choose the summer transplant option, the cost savings on liners and balancing the workload makes up for additional costs during the long growing cycle. Winter transplanting offers timing predictability at a high yield. Transplanting perennials in May adds product depth during garden mum season, a competitive advantage compared to growers who only offer mums, pansies, and ornamental cabbage or kale. .... »»

( + ) Hot Crops for the Warm Season
Mark Sanford, Syngenta Technical Services
Going into the hot summer months will require a different culture regime for heat-loving annuals in order to keep them flowering and vigorous. Due to the amount of water needed to keep plants thriving, supplemental fertilizer will also be required. Plants need fertilizer not only to maintain tone but also to help them stay in color during periods of high stress..... »»

( + ) Vegetative Annual Disease Management
By Jane Trolinger, Ph.D., Syngenta Flowers Technical Services
Vegetative annual crops can be affected during production by several different diseases, some of which can be devastating. Recently, two types of pathogens have been problematic for calibrachoa, New Guinea impatiens, petunia and verbena: Botrytis, an ubiquitous fungus known as gray mold; and the tospoviruses, Impatiens Necrotic Spot Virus ("INSV") and Tomato Spotted Wilt Virus ("TSWV"). Here are some tips for managing Botrytis and tospoviruses in the greenhouse. To prevent Botrytis: .... »»

( + ) Cultural Tips for Warm Season Bedding Plants
By Ken Harr, Syngenta Technical Services
Now that we're in the first weeks of spring, warm-season crops occupy more and more square-footage in greenhouses. Begonias, Salvia, Geraniums, Zinnias, Pentas, Gazanias and many other warm-season crops share a requirement for warmer soil temperatures to produce healthy root systems. Keeping the soil temperature at a near constant 67°F average daily temperature ("ADT") will help ensure adequate water and nutrient uptake. .... »»
